The Sweetest Terror
Sugarbound Confections is a VR baking game with a sinister twist — blending the warmth of homemade treats with the icy chill of unseen horror. Players prepare desserts while avoiding a monstrous candy demon lurking just beyond the oven light.
Designed in Unity for immersive VR, it invites players to mix, pour, and decorate confections that could either save *or* doom their family. Its nostalgic art direction combines suburban coziness with neon dread, evoking a haunted magazine ad straight out of 1987.
Background & Inspiration
This game is a prequel to a larger project I’m developing, incorporating childhood nostalgia and horror elements from pre‑1985 films. By blending family memories with vintage horror flavour, I created an 80s‑horror‑magazine aesthetic that invites players into a retro‑collage nightmare.
Gameplay Mechanics
The core of the experience revolves around three pillars: Baking, Stalking Demon, and Hidden Lore. Each bake session distracts the demon, unlocking time for exploration and secrets. Discovering lore leads to secret endings, achievements, and replay value.
As the night progresses through three acts (based on the hour within the night), the demon evolves from quiet stalker to manipulator of the environment, culminating in an escape‑or‑survive finale. Sound cues, baking efficiency, and exploration all feed the tension in unpredictable ways.
